Sir William Huggins - Today in History

Thanks to an entry at What’s Up - 365 Days of Skywatching I learned that …

On this day in 1881, Sir William Huggins made the first photographic spectrum of a comet (1881 III) and discovered cyanogen (CN) emission at violet wavelengths. Unfortunately, his discovery caused public panic around 29 years later when Earth passed through the tail of Halley’s Comet. What a shame the public didn’t realize that cyanogens are also released organically! More than fearing what is in a comet’s tail, they should have been thinking about what might happen should a comet strike. Tonight look at the wasted Southern Highland area of the Moon with new eyes… Many of these craters you see were caused by impacts - some as large as the nucleus of Halley itself.

How Do You Answer, “What Do You Do?”?

Has anyone ever asked you, “What do you do?”?

Po Bronson, in his book, What Should I Do With My Life?, calls this “the great American cocktail party question”.

The man in the video below is Paul Potts. What does he do?

It is tempting to answer that he is a mobile phone salesman. After all, he works in a store (Car Phone Warehouse) that sells mobile phones and he sells them.

His hair is a bit short.

His suit is a bit inexpensive.

But, somehow, I don’t think selling mobile phones is what he really does.

As you watch the video, watch those who are watching Paul. Watch those initial faces … the expressions of doubt. Then watch them transform.

Perhaps it will bring a small tear to your eye.

A friend sent me a link to this guy’s video. Perhaps it is because I’m totally untalented in art, but I found this fascinating. He creates this painting using spray paint in about 10 minutes.

Here is his website: http://www.sprej.com/.

He does custom paintings as well, including landscapes, wildlife and even portraits.

What? Sit? Are you CRAZY?

It seems that we do not like people to sit.

We dislike it so much, that we work over and over and over to be sure that people do not sit.

Illegal Employers and Edgar Velázquez

A story in the Providence Journal (also accessible from this site) tells the story of Edgar Velázquez. An illegal immigrant, he was apparently employed by a tree care service. The owner reportedly knew he was illegal and paid him in cash, under the table. When he was working, without the protective headgear required for such work, a chainsaw blade “kicked back and sliced through his nose, left eyelid and forehead”.

The story indicates that his employer then arranged for immigration to deport him to avoid the issues of this accident.

One year ago, Edgar Velázquez slashed his face open with a chainsaw while working for a Warwick tree service company. The saw blade struck a fence, kicked back and sliced through his nose, left eyelid and forehead, leaving a flayed crimson channel and nearly exposed bone. Though a surgeon repaired his face, his wounds reopen and ooze, he said, and his pain lingers.

At the time, Velázquez was in the country illegally from Mexico, working for William J. Gorman Jr., owner of Billy G’s Tree Care. Velázquez said Gorman hired him despite knowing of his undocumented status.

Soon after his injury, Velázquez learned that he was entitled to seek compensation from his employer for his medical bills, permanent disfigurement and weekly benefits.

But Velázquez never had his day in court.

State law entitles undocumented workers to workers’ compensation benefits — as is true in many other states — but on the day of Velázquez’s scheduled hearing, on Aug. 2, immigration agents arrested him outside the J. Joseph Garrahy Judicial Complex in Providence. Less than one month later, the 20-year-old was sent back to Mexico.

“I was about to get into the courthouse when Mr. Gorman said my name. He speaks a little Spanish. He says, ‘Edgar, Edgar, stop!’ So I turned around and Immigration was there. And then he [Gorman] laughed, and he said, ‘Now Edgar, I’m sending you back to Mexico — I have no use for you now,’ ” Velázquez said in a phone interview from Mexico. “He said, ‘Edgar, adiós.’ ”

more here …

I found this story at WorkingImmigrants.com which has much more information as background.

As that site notes, “There is quite a lot of passion around the issue of ‘illegal immigrants,’ but far too little passion around the issue of ‘illegal employers.’”

Lizzie Palmer - FlutieCutie - Remember Me

I am strongly opposed to the conflict (”war”) in Iraq and what I believe to be the politics of deception that took us there.

But that said, for me, opposing the fight and supporting the troops are not opposites. For me they are parallel, synchronous thoughts and feelings.

There is a video on YouTube which was put together by Lizzie Palmer (with some help).

Lizzie is 15 years old. She uses the YouTube handle of FlutieCutie.

Here is some info about Lizzie
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=FlutieCutie

She has made many “tribute” videos about the military.

This particular one, uploaded more than six months ago (12.Nov.2006) is experiencing lots of internet fame. In part because of it’s appearances on conservative blogs and lists, it has now been viewed more than 6.6 Million times.

But it isn’t just on conservative blogs and lists. Like I said, I oppose the war.

Frequently, the young remind us of what we knew when we were young … and what we fail to remember in the hub-ub of adultness.

I recommend you get a box of tissues.

American Pi Coffee MugThough I never really got paid for anything mathematical, mathematics is my formal college degree.

I have a BA in Mathematics. No, not a BS. I have a BA. But that’s another story.

Even though I’ve never “done” math for money, I still enjoy the mathematical gift.

Here is the best gift shop I’ve found for mathematicians.

Do you know a mathematician? Maybe s/he would like an “American Pi” coffee mug. You can see it on this page.

Are You Trying to Marry Someone in the Military?

It can be a problem, especially because you are here and s/he is there.

Montana has the answer. You can get married in Montana with a double proxy wedding. Both of you appoint a proxy to act on your behalf and the proxies do all the work. They take the vows for you. Neither of you have to be there.

Think I’m kidding? Read the article.
