If you have begun using IE7, you have almost certainly noted that the classic menu, the File-Edit-View Toolbar is not on the top, immediately under the window title, where it ought to be.
We have spent years creating a standard layout for the graphical user interface (gui). And for some unknown reason Microsoft decided to not abide by their own standards.
Fortunately, you can fix it. This page explains how.
Put the info below in notepad and save as toolbar.reg
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
“ITBar7Position”=dword:00000001
Here are my my attempts at clarification:
- There are three lines of text. They begin with “Windows”, “[HKEY_CURRENT_USER” and “ITBar7Position”.
- If you copy paste into notepad, change the “curly” quotation marks to plain straight quotation marks.
- You may save the file on your desktop.
- After saving the file on your desktop, double click it and allow it to update the registry.
- If that doesn’t do the job, reboot.
If you try this and have any problems, let me know. I’ll keep tweaking this post.

Where should the file be saved? I mean, which directory/sub-directory?

Seems to work anywhere. Try the desktop.
I’ve updated the entry to note that.

Is there any way to get the icons (homepage, rss feeds, printer icon etc..) below file/edit/view as before? Why do they even give me a bar if I can place it where I want (ugh…). If you could do the same for this menu it would end my last gripe about IE7. Why I have to move the mouse completely opposite of the other menu options is beyond me. Way to go BillG. Off to firefox until this can be back to normal. Even to the side of HELP would be great. I just don’t see the point of putting it on the tabbed line when it could go at the end of links or end of help (toolbar discussed here).
Thank James…You were the first hit for me and fixed a major issue. The file menu is so useful and it should be illegal to move it
