Age 21, #NewYorkCity. Wide-eyed, (not so) innocent, blazingly alive and bursting with joy at living my dream. Fearless. After graduating from the exquisite @umichmusicaltheatre program, I hit the ground running in the city and was starring in one of now multiple Tony, Oscar, Emmy, #EGOT award-winning wonderful songwriter/composer #RobertLopez ( #Frozen, #Coco, #AvenueQ #TheBookofMormon) first musicals, "1001 Nights" (yes, the blonde Scheherazade--as I was the only one who could belt an A below high C) off Broadway. (Little did I know my future BFF from #LegallyBlonde @alannaubach would also be singing his amazing songs 18 years later as the inimitable Mama Imelda in Coco. When worlds collide!) I had the world on a string and life had blasted open for me at an unprecedented zenith of freedom, excitement, culture and creativity in the greatest city in the world. Kid in a candy store! To this day, this remains one of the happiest, most fulfilling periods of my life. Soon after, I stumbled into the world of film and TV and was on my way into a new realm. My mentor once told me that the hero's journey into becoming a person of power, beauty and grace is called the Return to Innocence. Where we apply what we've learned on the path, transform our wounds into knowledge through experience, and return to the purity in our hearts, to our essence, our dreams, our spirit, our aliveness--but this time with wisdom. This time with awareness, which makes it that much sweeter. For now we see it, we know it, we have faced our trials, our mortality, we understand the blessings and savor them in humility and gratitude, because we have lived. We have traveled down into, returned and risen up from the underworld and have been born anew. Now, we consciously choose our joy, our happiness, our passion and dream a new world into being, from that place of wisdom, that place of authenticity, having reclaimed Who We Are.
