Number 5 on the list of my favorite castles and palaces in Germany. Bürresheim Castle in federal state of Rhineland - Palatinate. Its origins date back to the middle of the XII century. Over the centuries the fortress has been rebuilt and enlarged many times, and its present late Gothic shape was obtained during the last major reconstruction carried out in the XV century. The oldest element of the foundation is the characteristic square Romanesque tower, which originates from the XII century. Currently, the fully restored building is open to the public. The Bürresheim Castle have never been conquered or destroyed and have survived to this day in such good condition. The castle is also a movie star ... it played in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. As I’ve had to use it quite regularly after moving to Germany, I’ve realized its translations can be quite literal but not necessarily used in the correct context or colloquially correct. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t know where I’d be without it (we’ve come a long way haven’t we??), but I’ve learned to use it with a grain of salt. . There’s a German woman with whom I speak regularly, and she’s kind enough to help me with words and phrases. My latest question to her: How do I say “no onions”? Is it ‘ohne’ or ‘keine’?? (I should mention that my very first encounter with this type of order had me saying “nein” and pointing to a picture of onions. 🤦🏻‍♀️ At least I’ve progressed a little.) It seems to be that ‘ohne’ is more polite and ‘keine’ is more familiar. Can anyone who speaks German fluently confirm this? . PS - “onions” is “zwiebeln”.
